Doctor Helps Agent
Dr. John E. Sherman, M.D., F.A.C.S, is a true humanitarian and
friend to the DEA. In fact, he is surely a special friend to Special
Agent Bruce Travers.
Agent Travers was shot in the jaw during a raid in New York in
1988. As a result of the shooting he sustained severe facial injuries,
and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment.
Fortunately, Dr. Sherman, who specializes in plastic surgery,
particularly facial trauma, heard about the incident and visited
Agent Travers. After a thorough examination of Agent Travers, Dr.
Sherman offered Agent Travers his expert services, and has since
performed over a dozen facial reconstructive surgeries.
Through his work with Agent Travers, Dr. Sherman and New York
Division SAC Carlo Boccia began discussions concerning a DEA physician
referral system.
Together, Dr. Sherman and SAC Boccia have now designed a referral
system for the New York Division listing treatment specialists in
every medical discipline who would be available 7 days a week, 24
hours a day, in life and non-life threatening situations, to act
as an advisory panel for DEA. This would also include follow-up
care to include rehabilitation programs.
Additionally, special arrangements have been made that would allow
an Emergency Medical Response (EMR) team to be on standby when the
DEA is preparing for a sensitive raid situation. The EMR team would
be strategically located which would enable them to respond immediately
to a emergency situation. SAC Boccia said "This is the first
referral system of this type used by the Federal Government. "
Meanwhile, Dr. Sherman was presented with a special commendation
for his work with Agent Travers.
[Editor's note: Dr. Sherman has specialized in plastic surgery
since 1978 and is certified by the American Board of Plastic surgery.
He is Assistant Clinical Professor of Surgery at the Mount Sinai
School of Medicine.]
