Congenital Breast Problems
Indications: The topic of congenital
breast problems is quite wide. This problem extends to the
absence of the breast (amastia, Polands syndrome) through
the developmental abnormalities of the breast such as multiple
breasts, severe asymmetry, tuberous breasts, and some forms
of Polands syndrome
Treatment: The treatment pattern of congenital
breast problems, including Polands syndrome, and timing of
the treatment varies. The first attention should be made during
the child's adolescence when consultation should be sought.
Later reconstruction of the breast certainly is possible,
and can be performed later in life.
Operations: The procedure may
be as simple as the insertion of an implant for breast symmetry
or hypomastia, or the complete creation of the breast in the
case of Polands symdrome or other conditions.
The operation may be performed in the operating
room at the hospital or in the office setting.
Below are some representative examples of congenital
breast problems. Dr. Sherman will discuss your individual
problem and outline a proposed plan for the correction of
the congenital breast problem including Polands syndrome.
