Nose Plastic Surgery (Rhinoplasty)
Dr. Sherman offers a complete choice of surgery for
the refinement of the nose, (commonly known as "nose jobs") as well as the restoration of nasal
function. Over the past 20 years, Dr. Sherman has performed thousands
of rhinoplasty procedures, treating each nose individually, to avoid
the "cookie cutter" after rhinoplasty look.
Operation: Rhinoplasty may be performed
in the office or in the hospital, depending on your age, your health,
and the additional procedures that may be performed at the same
time. If performed in Dr. Sherman's fully certified office operating suite in New York,
the surgery is usually performed as out-patient, and you leave the
office approximately 1-2 hours after your rhinoplasty surgery. If
performed at the hospital, it may be either The New York Hospital
Cornell Medical Center, or Beth Israel North Hospital, both on the
East Side of Manhattan. The entire rhinoplasty procedure may take
anywhere from 1 to 2 hours.
During rhinoplasty surgery Dr. Sherman will correct
functional problems of your nose as well as the aesthetic appearance.
Our philosophy is that the nose not only must look wonderful, but
must work also, avoiding the common post-rhinoplasty functional
problems.
Variations of the Operation: Each
individual rhinoplasty plastic surgery is different. The goals of the teen seeking
nasal improvement may be very different than that of the 40 year
old seeking the same procedure. In particular, the nature of the
skin envelope and anatomy is entirely different from patient to
patient.
In order to reach a satisfactory result, Dr. Sherman
will spend considerable time with you to help you define the aesthetic
goals of your rhinoplasty. Dr. Sherman will not use computer imaging
to visualize the proposed changes. The computer image will only
convince you to undergo the rhinoplasty, it will not address your
individual anatomy, your skin type, and most importantly, the ability
of the surgeon to realize these goals for your rhinoplasty surgery.
Anesthesia: As in all of our procedures,
the anesthesiologist is a board-certified fully accredited physician.
The rhinoplasty procedure may be performed under intravenous sedation
anesthesia or a general anesthesia. Occasionally the nose is so
deviated (crooked) that a general anesthesia is preferred to ensure
the maintenance of your airway and your safety during your rhinoplasty.
Convalescence: Your "down"
time may vary according to the complexity of the operation
and your goals. Bruising may also vary, but is almost totally
gone by 10-12 days after rhinoplasty surgery. If still present
at that time, you may apply a light cover-up makeup to conceal
any remnant of the discoloration. We ask that you refrain
from exercise for 3-4 weeks after rhinoplasty. Jarring activities
such as running should be avoided for at least 1 month after
rhinoplasty surgery.
Insurance Information: Reimbursement
from your insurance carrier may vary depending on the carrier,
and the type of operation performed. Generally, the companies
will provide some type of reimbursement if there is a degree
of difficulty breathing, documented with an anatomical problem
that warrants correction at surgery. The procedures that are
usually covered are:
