Male rhinoplasty is a specialized surgical procedure that corrects functional issues or aesthetically improves the nose’s shape and size in alignment with male aesthetics. About Male Rhinoplasty

All forms of nose surgery aim for improvement and balance, but the aesthetic goals of male rhinoplasty focus on creating a nose that is strong and proportionate to a man’s typically larger and more angular facial features. (1) The procedure often involves reducing an overly prominent dorsal hump, narrowing nasal bones, refining a wide or bulbous tip, or improving air pathways. A surgeon must avoid over-rotation of the tip or creating a scooped profile, which can feminize the face. Instead, the goal is a straight, sometimes slightly augmented, dorsum that projects confidence and strength.

Male Rhinoplasty Techniques

Dr. Sherman employs various techniques to cater to a patient’s specific anatomy, concerns, and desired outcome(s). These include a closed (or endonasal) rhinoplasty, where Dr. Sherman makes all incisions inside the nose, or an open (or external) rhinoplasty, which involves a small, well-hidden incision on the columella (tissue strip between the nostrils). (2) Both approaches are highly effective in correcting both nasal deformities and improving nasal function.

Dr. Sherman frequently performs a septoplasty alongside male rhinoplasty to fix a deviated septum. This condition, which often results from injury or a congenital condition, narrows the nasal passages and obstructs breathing. (3) When necessary, Dr. Sherman can also perform nasal reconstruction, utilizing the patient’s own septal or ear cartilage to build up the nasal bridge, reinforce the tip, or provide structural support, which is often necessary to maintain a strong, straight profile.

Benefits

For many men, male rhinoplasty is truly transformative, impacting both their physical health and self-perception. Key benefits include:

  • Functional Improvement: A primary benefit of male rhinoplasty is the correction of breathing difficulties stemming from a deviated septum or collapsed nasal valves. Improved airflow can lead to better sleep quality, reduced snoring, and increased stamina during physical activity.
  • Enhanced Facial Harmony: The nose is the central feature of the face. By bringing it into better proportion—whether by reducing a bump, straightening a deviation, or refining the size—the entire face appears more balanced and attractive.
  • Increased Confidence: Addressing a long-standing dissatisfaction with a feature as prominent as the nose can significantly boost a man’s self-esteem and confidence in both social and professional settings.
  • Masculine Appearance: A well-executed male rhinoplasty can strengthen the entire facial profile and make the jawline and chin appear more defined, contributing to a more powerful and masculine facial aesthetic.

Candidates

Potential candidates for male rhinoplasty are men who are physically healthy, nonsmokers, and have realistic expectations about the surgical outcome. Candidates typically qualify for surgery with one or more of the following:

  • Nasal Function Challenges: Men with chronic breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum or prior nasal injury.
  • Seeking Aesthetic Refinement: Men bothered by a prominent dorsal hump, crooked appearance, bulbous tip, or a nose that appears out of proportion with other facial features.
  • Seeking Revision: Men who have had a prior rhinoplasty that resulted in an unsatisfactory appearance.

During your consultation, Dr. Sherman will listen to your concerns, examine your nose, and review your medical history to determine your candidacy.

Preparation

Preparation for male rhinoplasty is fairly straightforward, but it is essential for ensuring a smooth procedure and recovery. Dr. Sherman and his staff will provide you with more detailed instructions, but some general advice includes:

  • Temporarily suspending use of any blood-thinning medications or supplements.
  • Quitting smoking (if applicable) several weeks before your procedure.
  • Abstaining from any alcohol consumption at least 24 hours before your procedure.
  • Arranging transportation and personal assistance for the day of your procedure and 24-48 hours afterward.

Procedure

Dr. Sherman performs male rhinoplasty in an accredited outpatient surgical facility with patients under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. The procedure usually takes between one and three hours, depending on the complexity of the necessary corrections. Depending on your concerns, Dr. Sherman will perform either an open or closed rhinoplasty for optimal correction and aesthetically pleasing results. He starts by carefully separating the nasal skin from the underlying bone and cartilage. He will then reshape the nose by removing excess bone or cartilage to correct a hump, repositioning bone to narrow the bridge, or adding grafts to augment shape or support the nasal structure. Once he achieves the desired shape, he redrapes the skin and closes incisions with fine sutures. He packs the nostrils with gauze and places a splint and surgical tape on the exterior of the nose to protect it and support the new structure during the initial healing phase.

Recovery

Patients typically experience congestion and a dull headache upon waking from the procedure. Patients can manage discomfort and swelling with prescription medications and rest. During the first week post-surgery, you will experience significant swelling and bruising around the nose and eyes, and it is essential to elevate your head and avoid strenuous activities for 4 to 6 weeks, or until Dr. Sherman gives clearance. He will remove the external splint after 5 to 7 days, at which time you can return to non-strenuous activities. Once the splint is off, you will see the initial shape of your improved nose, but it will still be swollen. The majority of swelling gradually subsides over several months, though subtle swelling can take up to a full year to resolve completely, especially in the nasal tip.

Results

The final results of male rhinoplasty are generally permanent. After reshaping bone and cartilage and swelling fully resolves, the new nasal contour will appear and remain in place. Patients can expect a nose that is:

  • Balanced: Harmonious with the rest of their facial features.
  • Functional: Clear of obstruction, allowing for easy breathing.
  • Masculine: Straight, strong, and proportional, enhancing their overall profile.

The true success of the procedure lies in its subtlety—a well-performed male rhinoplasty should look natural, making people notice an improvement in the patient’s overall look without necessarily identifying a surgical intervention.

Corresponding Procedures

While Dr. Sherman often performs male rhinoplasty as a stand-alone procedure for transformative results, some patients include corresponding procedures for more comprehensive masculine facial harmonization.

  • Chin Augmentation: A strong chin and nose are the pillars of the male profile. If a patient has a weak or recessed chin, Dr. Sherman can augment it with an implant to dramatically improve overall facial proportion and definition.
  • Blepharoplasty: Addressing signs of aging around the eyes can complement a refreshed profile following rhinoplasty, creating a more youthful and alert appearance.

FAQ

Is male rhinoplasty painful?

Most patients report discomfort and pressure rather than severe pain during recovery. The nose is typically numb for the first few days, and most patients keep pain well-managed with prescribed medication. The most common complaint is the temporary inability to breathe through the nose due to swelling and internal packing. During the procedure itself, you will receive anesthesia to keep you comfortable and relaxed.

How long does swelling last after male rhinoplasty?

Initially, dramatic swelling subsides within the first 2-3 weeks. The majority of the swelling will be gone after 3 months. The remaining, subtle swelling, especially in the nasal tip, can take 12 to 18 months to fully resolve.

Will I have visible scarring after male rhinoplasty?

If Dr. Sherman performs a closed rhinoplasty, all scars will be internal. If it is an open rhinoplasty, he makes a small, strategic V-shaped incision on the underside of the columella, and the scar will fade to be virtually invisible over time.
