Breast Mastopexy (Breast Lift)
The breast mastopexy or breast lift plastic
surgery is an operation that is very similar to the breast
reduction surgery. There is a repositioning of the nipple
and the areolar above the breast crease (inframammary fold),
and reshaping of the breast without the large removal of the
breast tissue. It is often referred to as the changing of
the skin envelope, without the significant change in contents
of the envelope. The result is a nicer aesthetic result, and
a firmer, younger-looking breast.
Indications for the Mastopexy:
The typical breast lift patient has sagging breasts, with
the nipple below the breast crease. The operation repositions
this nipple in its proper anatomical position. Most patients
for mastopexy are in their thirties and forties. This operation
is one way of reversing after pregnancy and childbirth changes
that are common in the breast.
Operation: Breast lift plastic
surgery may be performed as an out-patient in our fully accredited
operating suite, or as an out-patient in the hospital. If
you prefer the hospital, Dr. Sherman operates at The New York
Hospital Cornell Medical Center, and also at Beth Israel Hospital
North Division in New York.
The procedure usually takes about 2 to 2 1/2
hours. The patient returns home after one or two hours in
the recovery area. Patients who live outside of Manhattan
are encouraged to stay in Manhattan overnight. Sutures are
removed up through ten days after surgery.
Anesthesia: Breast lift plastic
surgery may be performed either under intravenous anesthesia
or general anesthesia. All of our anesthesiologists are board
certified and highly experienced physicians.
Convalescence: After breast
lift surgery, it takes approximately one week to ten days
to feel comfortable. You should refrain from athletics for
three weeks after surgery.
Cigarette Smoking: It should
be noted that Dr. Sherman does not perform this operation
on cigarette smokers. Most of the potential complications
are related to cigarette smoke. If you are a smoker, you should
stop for at least one month prior to surgery. Nicotine patches
are not a substitute, and do not significantly diminish the
risk of complication.
Complications: Complications
are rare following breast mastopexy. However, scars may be
minimal or noticeable, but certainly are present. Nipple sensation
may also be diminished, and there may be healing problems.
Dr. Sherman will discuss all potential complications with
you concerning this operation.
