Restylane® / Perlane®

A natural beauty lift

Over the past few years many new fillers have been developed that can help the patient look younger and maintain a fresh appearance. The most promising and exciting products that have been developed are the hyaluronic acid products, Restylane® and Perlane®, which Dr. Sherman has been using since January 2003. As aging continues, our diminished production of hyaluronic acid causes the skin to lose elasticity and to accelerate soft tissue loss and wrinkling. Hyaluronic acid is immunologically neutral...it does not cause a reaction by the immune system. The advantage of hyaluronans is that they are nontoxic and biocompatible to human skin. It binds with water and gives structure to tissue.

Since 1996, more than one million people have been successfully treated with Restylane® products in more than 60 countries worldwide. With Restylane®, you can have a natural beauty lift with the body's own material. Restylane® is a crystal-clear, non-animal, biodegradable gel based on hyaluronic acid which is a natural substance. The gel is injected into the skin in tiny amounts with a very fine needle. The result is instantaneous and produces a long-lasting, natural enhancement, gentle and safe to your skin.

Restylane® is made in Sweden, a nation known for health, nature and beauty. In November 2003 the Advisory Committee of the FDA voted to recommend approval of Restylane®. In December of 2003 Restylane was approved by the FDA for patient use in the United States.

Restylane® / Perlane® Treatment

We have successfully been using Restylane® and Perlane® in our office over the past year. The application does not require a skin test as do collagen injections. The procedure is relatively simple, and only minimally uncomfortable.

Achieving the look you desire is as easy as it is quick. The result is instantaneous. No previous skin test is needed, which means that you can have the Restylane® treatment immediately. The session often takes less than thirty minutes. The time differs somewhat depending on the correction you want to have performed.

Unlike Zyderm® or Zyplast® which we over-correct, counting on the resorption of product over the ensuing days, Restylane® actually gains in volume because of the binding of water, increasing the volume.

Restylane® is available in three tissue-tailored variants, each specially designed for a particular different purpose and effect such as smoothing out tiny lines, shaping facial contours or sculpting lips. The difference between the products is the gel particle size. The Perlane® has larger and thicker gel droplets that is used in deeper lines. Restylane® is injected in a more superficial level. To achieve the optimal result, Dr. Sherman administers the combination that best matches your skin and personal needs. The three products that are variations of the product are:

  • Restylane® is intended for wrinkle correction and lip enhancements.
  • Restylane® Fine Lines is used for correcting thin superficial lines, around the mouth, for example, forehead lines and smile lines.
  • Restylane® and Perlane® can be used for shaping facial contours, such as cheeks and chin, correcting deep folds and for the volume augmentation of the lips.

Prior to Treatment

Prior to treatment all makeup should be removed. If you are taking aspirin, multi-vitamins, vitamin E, or anything that promotes bleeding, you should discontinue it eight days prior to the treatment to avoid bruising. You may then apply makeup immediately after treatment. If you have experienced cold sores in the past, you may elect to take Valtrex® prior to your Restylane® / Perlane® treatment.

Pain Reduction

To minimize any pain or discomfort during the injection process, a topical anesthetic cream can be applied to the area to be treated. You can also choose to have a local anesthetic injection, although this is not usually required.

What to Expect After Treatment

Immediately after the treatment, you may experience slight redness, swelling, tenderness, bruising and an itching sensation in the treated area. This is a normal result of the injection. The discomfort is temporary and generally disappears in a few days. With lip augmentation, the swelling may last longer. Some patients experience swelling for about a week. During this time, the lips can look somewhat uneven. This means that the result directly after the treatment should not be regarded as the final result.

A touch-up treatment within 2-4 weeks after the initial treatment may be necessary to achieve an optimal correction.

After treatment - please note the following:

  • Avoid touching the treated area within the following six hours.
  • After treatment, the area can be gently washed with soap and water, and light make-up can be applied.
  • Until the initial swelling and redness have disappeared, do not expose the treated area to intense heat (e.g. solarium and sunbathing) or extreme cold. If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores.
  • If you are taking aspirin or any similar medication, please note that the treatment may increase the bruising and bleeding at the injection site.

More About RestylaneŽ

RestylaneŽ creates beauty with a gel based on a natural substance called hyaluronic acid. It gives natural volume in your skin to lift and produce new firmness, resulting in a healthy, vital appearance.

Natural material
Hyaluronic acid is identical in all living organisms and occurs naturally in the body, creating volume in the skin, giving the eyes their shape and lubricating joints. The Non-Animal, Stabilized, Hyaluronic Acid (NASHA) in RESTYLANE smoothes wrinkles and folds, giving volume to your lips or contours to your face.

In contrast to some other hyaluronic acid products, the hyaluronic acid in RESTYLANE is not extracted from animals. This means that there is no risk of transmitting disease or eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as chicken and eggs.

Stabilized for long duration
After injection, RESTYLANE generally remains for 6-12 months when injected into the skin. Due to a very effective stabilization method, the volume remains intact for a long period of time. By comparison, non-stabilized hyaluronic acid products are degraded within days to weeks after the injection.

As the injected stabilized hyaluronic acid in RESTYLANE breaks down, water takes its place. The less concentrated the gel becomes, the more water it is able to bind. This is one of the main reasons why RESTYLANE lasts so long.

The length of time a treatment maintains its effect is very individual and depends on many factors.

Naturally integrated
The hyaluronic acid in RESTYLANE is naturally integrated into the tissue and allows for the passage of vital nutritive substances like oxygen and hormones. As cells are also able to pass between fragments of the gel your skin will look perfectly healthy and natural.

Biodegradable
The hyaluronic acid in RESTYLANE is biodegradable, which means that, when the injected gel breaks down, it turns into water and carbon dioxide and disappears unnoticed from your body.

Follow up and Maintenance

As your face is constantly changing, beauty is best maintained by evaluating the need for further treatment from time to time. With any type of filler substance, you always have the option of continuing or changing the combination of treatments. The treatment can be repeated as often as you like.

Non Animal Product

Since RestylaneŽ is a totally non-animal product, there is no risk of eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs. Unlike some other injectable products for wrinkle treatment and lip enhancement (for example collagen made from cow hide and hyaluronic acid made from rooster combs), RestylaneŽ is a totally non-animal product. This means that there is no risk of transmitting disease or eliciting allergic reactions if you are sensitive to common foods, such as beef, chicken and eggs.

  • Long-lasting, but not permanent
  • Unique product
RESTYLANE is the only injectable dermal filler containing NASHA, Non-Animal, Stabilized Hyaluronic Acid. When RESTYLANE breaks down, water takes its place. When totally absorbed, RESTYLANE turns into water and carbon dioxide and disappears without leaving any trace in your body.
Side Effects

After the treatment some common injection-related reactions may occur, such as swelling, redness, pain, itching, discoloration and tenderness at the injection site. These typically resolve spontaneously within a few days after injection into the skin and within a week after the injection into the lips.

Other types of reactions are very rare, but about 1 in 2000 treated patients have experienced localized reactions thought to be of a hypersensitive nature. These have usually consisted of swelling at the injection site, sometimes affecting the surrounding tissues. Redness, tenderness and rarely acne-like formations have also been reported. These reactions have either started a few days after the injection or after a delay of two to four weeks, and have generally been described as mild to moderate and self-limiting with an average duration of two weeks.
