Ultrasonic Liposuction
Ultrasound liposuction
(UAL or ultrasonic liposuction) was introduced in 1993
in Europe and in 1995 in the United States. Dr. Sherman was
one of the first practitioners of ultrasonic liposuction, having used
the procedure both in Europe and in the U.S. shortly after
its introduction. He has taught the procedure during the courses
offered to other plastic surgeons, and has been featured on
many television shows and print media, including 20/20,
Town and Country, Tattler, New York Magazine, and Harpers
Bazaar.
The principle of ultrasound liposuction is similar
to the mechanism of the ultrasound apparatus that the dental
hygienist uses to remove plaque from your teeth. A sound wave
is delivered through a probe that helps emulsify the fat in
the surrounding tissue. In the hands of the experienced physician,
the operation is easier to perform allowing better results
to be achieved, and possibly allowing more skin retraction
to follow. The results allow better contour, and a more predictable
result. Ultrasonic liposuction is especially useful in revision
cases and large volumes. It also allows easier treatment where
there is especially dense fat: the back areas, the waist and,
especially in male patients.
Dr. Sherman combines traditional and ultrasound
liposuction on most patients. We emphasize that ultrasound
is especially helpful, but the experience of the surgeon is
as critical as the tools that we use. Good liposuction results
may still be obtained without the ultrasound, it simply increases
the index of patient satisfaction and safety, and reduces
the need for further "touch-ups."
